Autumn comfort foods

Okay, if you're on a diet, don't even read this, just skip right along to the next blog because...
...Soft and Cozy presents a list of some great comfort foods perfect for Autumn.

Each of the following has been taste-tested and rated by our staff at Soft and Cozy (and by our staff, I mean me):

1) Eggnog is already out on grocery store shelves. Given the brand, drinking eggnog can be an okay experience or an absolutely delicious and soothing one (even without any alcohol added).
Highly recommended: Southern Comfort Vanilla Spice Eggnog
Very flavorful and great consistency. Not bland like other eggnog. One of the best-tasting brands available.
2) Hot chocolate with melted marshmallow.
What could be better than a warm cup of hot chocolate? How about a warm cup of hot chocolate with a chocolate covered pumpkin-shaped Peep melted inside it?
3) Candy corn. As far as we know, these have absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever but they do have the benefit of reminding most people of their childhood and the fun of trick or treating.
4) Krispy Kreme Pumpkin Spice Cake doughnuts. OMG! Like a regular glazed doughnut but with spices that will totally remind you of fall.

Readers, what are some of your favorite fall comfort foods? Feel free to comment and let me know.

Soft and cozy television viewing

Okay, there's comfort food, so why not comfort television?

If you're looking for a television show to cuddle up on the couch and watch alone or with family or friends, order the DVD of the short-lived series "Wonderfalls."

This show has got it all:
•A world-weary but lovable lead character
•Great chemistry between the leading lady and her love interest
•Niagara Falls gift shop setting
•Memorable lines
•Great acting
•A catchy theme song
and so much more! (In fact, I think this is probably one of the best television shows ever, which is probably why it was cancelled. But, don't worry, even though it was cancelled long before it should have been, there is still a sense of resolution with the last episode so you won't feel left hanging. )

So, check out this DVD box set today and then enjoy exchanging in joke gifts, such as cow creamers and thinking monkeys, with your friends and family.

If you like this site, you might be an HSP!

What's an HSP? HSP stands for highly sensitive person. Are you one? Take the quiz below to see:

True or False?
•I am easily overwhelmed by strong sensory input.
•I seem to be aware of subtleties in my environment.
•Other people's moods affect me.
•I tend to be very sensitive to pain.
•I find myself needing to withdraw during busy days, into bed or into a darkened room or any place where I can have some privacy and relief from stimulation.
•I am particularly sensitive to the effects of caffeine.
•I am easily overwhelmed by things like bright lights, strong smells, coarse fabrics,or sirens close by.
•I have a rich,complex inner life.
•I am made uncomfortable by loud noises.
•I am deeply moved by the arts or music.
•My nervous system sometimes feels so frazzled that I just have to go off by myself.
•I am conscientious.
•I startle easily.
•I get rattled when I have a lot to do in a short amount of time.
•When people are uncomfortable in a physical environment I tend to know what needs to be done to make it more comfortable (like changing the lighting or the seating).
•I am annoyed when people try to get me to do too many things at once.
•I try hard to avoid making mistakes or forgetting things.
•I make a point to avoid violent movies and TV shows.
•I become unpleasantly aroused when a lot is going on around me.
•Being very hungry creates a strong reaction in me,disrupting my concentration or mood.
•Changes in my life shake me up.
•I notice and enjoy delicate or fine scents, tastes, sounds, works of art.
•I find it unpleasant to have a lot going on at once.
•I make it a high priority to arrange my life to avoid upsetting or overwhelming situations.
•I am bothered by intense stimuli, like loud noises or chaotic scenes.
•When I must compete or be observed while performing a task, I become so nervous or shaky that I do much worse than I would otherwise.
•When I was a child, my parents or teachers seemed to see me as sensitive or shy.

If you answered True to many of these questions, you might be an HSP. For more accurate results, you can go to http://www.hsperson.com/pages/test.htm to take the test, which is automatically scored for you.

If you are an HSP, it makes sense that you find soft and cozy surroundings pleasant because HSPs are highly sensitive to their surroundings. And, apparently, the HSP can be greatly comforted by cozy home elements, such as soft lighting, relaxing scents and music.

Cute toy or display item for a cozy home

Handcrafted and old-fashioned toys can add to the cozy atmosphere in your home.

Here's a great one that would either make a nice toy for a child (12 and older) or that could be displayed (alone or with others) in your home.

Available at: www.maclinstudio.com

Here's the product description:

Cubebot Wood Robot

Robot toys are usually made of plastic and require batteries - but not this one! Inspired by the Japanese Shinto Kumi-ki puzzles, the Cubebot designed by David Weeks is a non-traditional take on the toy robot by joining ancient Japanese traditions with contemporary toy culture. Material: sustainably harvested Cherry Wood. Dimensions: 9.5 inches tall with 13.5 inch arm span (at play); 3.5 x 3.5 inch cube (at rest). Cubebots's powerful hardwood frame can hold many poses, and his elastic-band muscles and durable wood limbs gives him robot durability. When its time for him to rest, he folds into a perfect cube (actually you will have to help him). An enduring classic that will withstand generations of play. Recommended for ages 12+

Gorgeous cat calendar

This is one of the most gorgeous cat calendars we have ever seen. Very eye-catching. In fact, there's a copy gracing one of the walls in our Soft and Cozy office as we type this.

Plus, the money raised by calendar sales goes to a charity, the Marley Fund, that helps prevent the spread of feline leukemia and feline FIV.

Soft and cozy bed

Found this comforter in a magazine and checked it out on Amazon where it got 11 out of 11 top reviews. Customers seemed to love how lightweight and cozy this comforter is. However, some warn not to be "freaked out" by how thin the comforter appears when removed from packaging after shipment. Apparently, it will plump up just fine.

Art Boxes

I first stumbled across the above picture of one of Sidney Rosen's art boxes when I was looking at the Long Island Craft Guild's Web site and I was intrigued.

After a bit of a search, I found more samples of his work:

These are beautiful, unique wood crafts that would make fabulous addictions to any soft and cozy home. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find price information or size, but there is a Web site with the artist's email address:
sidsartbox.com/

Here's a description of his work from his Web site:

“Art Boxes” strives to combine flowing organic shapes with interesting and unusual woods. The interplay of harmony and contrast is emphasized, combined with a high degree of finish.

Art boxes are constructed from glued pieces of different species of hardwoods, cut into shapes with a bandsaw. The individual pieces are sanded, glued together, and given a natural finish.

Soft and Cozy movie

"Julie and Julia" is a good movie to watch as you curl up on the couch.

Starring Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Stanley Tucci, whom I want to marry after watching this movie, the plot follows a woman turning 30 who starts her own blog to record her experiences of cooking over 500 recipes from a book co-written by Julia Child.

Funny, engaging and relaxing movie to watch. But, with many, many scenes involving delicious-looking food, you might want to eat first or have plenty of gourmet popcorn on hand.
